The finely carved stone known as the ‘Mace Head’ is a very special ceremonial stone that was found in the most auspicious position within the inner chamber of the great mound. The ancient name for Knowth is Cnocba, the mound of the Goddess Bó, to whom the Boyne Valley is dedicated. Cnocba is the most highly decorated neolithic site in Europe.
