SHEELA-NA-GIG
Rahara, Co. Roscommon
The figure from this old church was discovered whilst clearing the graveyard and is now in Roscommon Museum. Sheela-na-gigs are regarded as ‘fertility images’ but their meaning and purpose goes much deeper as they represent the survival of female spirituality into the medieval Christian period.
